Most traditional iron ore projects mine ore deposits that are enriched naturally and contain high levels of iron known as hematite or direct shipping ore (DSO). DSO passes through a simple crushing, screening and blending process (beneficiation) before it is shipped overseas, mainly for steel production.

Direct shipping ores when mined typically have iron (Fe) content of between 56% Fe and 64% Fe.

In comparison magnetite ore has lower iron content when mined of between 25% and 40% Fe and requires processing, or magnetic separation, to separate magnetic minerals from other minerals in the ore.

The main iron mineral in magnetite ore is the ferrous iron oxide magnetite (Fe3O4) which when processed produces a magnetite concentrate with a magnetic content in excess of 96% magnetics. Further magnetic separation and milling produces even higher iron levels in the magnetite concentrate.

The much sought after magnetite concentrate is primarily used for dense medium separation in coal washing and mineral preparation as well as a feed for iron ore.

Magnetite is suited to coal washing due to its:

  • High density; and
  • Ability to be recovered via magnetic separation for recycling and reuse.

A Durable Mineral

The dense medium separation process used in most coal washing and magnetic separation plants requires a suspension of finely milled magnetite in water.

Magnetite for coal washing must be of overall high purity and be devoid of contaminants, such as hematite, sulphides or other minerals.

Magnetite is reasonably durable (and therefore does not readily break down), and is chemically stable during coal washing and magnetic separation.

It is also non-fouling, which means that even if small amounts become incorporated with washed products, subsequent treatment stages will not be adversely affected.

Magnetite ranging in grain size from coarse to ultrafine is used to suit the differing requirements of centrifuge assisted dense medium separation coal-preparation processes .
